I’ve never participated in canoeing, there’s probably like alien guts or something in there. We don’t know what Campbell did.

Yeah… wait, what Campbell did? What did… what did he do?

A lot of shit, man. Dunno if he did anything to the lake, though.

Heey…

What, uh… kind of stuff?

*he gestures around them* Scam camp. His house thing or whatever on spooky island is pretty fu- messed up.

There’s a house on Spooky Island? I didn’t know that… *he looks toward the island*

It’s,,, kinda terrible.

*looks back at Max* Oh yeah?

Yeah. Spooky island in general is just,,, terrible. I’m pretty sure there’s a kid stuck there and- *he looks vaugely disgusted*

There’s a kid stuck there?? Max, are you serious?

Maybe? I don’t know for sure. It was probably a fever day dream or something. Sure as hell wasn’t a ghost so.

What? What are you talking about? Have you been to the island? Did you see a kid there?

Yes, and yes. He just sorta appeared and was talking in weird 90’s lingo. I didn’t question it.

How do you know 90′s lingo? And… why didn’t you question that the kid was there? Was there another camp on the island?

He said stuff like “radical” and had light up shoes. And, There’s like, multiple different camps. But he had “camp campbell yellow” on. I’ve never seen him before that so,

Light-up shoes? Those were cool. But really? Campbell Yellow? And you hadn’t seen him before? That’s… very strange.

Yeah, this is like, my third year and I’ve never seen him before. That whole trip was weird to be fair.

Huh… Can you tell me what happened on that island?

I think I’ve told you parts of it before, we had like a camp fire and “scary” stories a few weeks ago and QM told us not to go to Spooky island so naturally Nikki, Neil, and I went over to spooky island with the platypus. This kid Jasper just appeared out of the bushes talking about monsters, we explored Campbells home thing, found some fucked up stuff, and found QM doing fucked up stuff. It was pretty eventful.

…. I think I remember part of that story. Dios Mio… The kid didn’t come back with you? Jasper, his name was?

Yeah. QM just took me, Niel, and Nikki back. I don’t think he even Acknowledged the other kid.

Have… you asked David or anybody else about Jasper?

Nope. I choose to ignore that whole night.

But… you said Jasper was left behind… what if he were a real person and is still on that island all alone?

“What would a scientist want with my city? Do you have a death wish, pathetic mortal?” Black Hat hissed lowly, his eye narrowed down at him. “You must be an idiot if you dare speak to me in such a familiar manor.”

“I just told you, I’m searching for an energy source that my instruments are picking up,” Carlos explained. “And I’m not being familiar – I’m being polite. You’re the one who’s leaning into my personal space, however.”

Carlos got the antennae back in both hands and looked down at his machine. It had been beeping rather aggressively at him for a little bit… he must be close. Though glancing at his danger meter Carlos could see that the needle was steadily moving further into the red zone, well on its way to the red zone. He hummed to himself – the energy source must be very unpredictable, he thought.

*laying face down in the dirt* yeah, why do you ask?

*frowns, but kneels down and pats his shoulder* You’re in the dirt, buddy. Come on… get up.

i don’t really wanna.. *he mumbles, shifting so he can at least see Carlos*

A bed will be much more comfortable, and cleaner, I promise. *he smiles at Max when the kid looks at him*

i thought about it but part of me is afraid to move..  *he wipes dirt and tears off his face*

*Carlos’ smile drops* I’m sorry to hear that, buddy… want me to carry you?

*he shrugs* i guess.. probably better then laying in the dirt for hours…

*he rolls Max into one arm and once he has a hold on the boy he stands up, cradling him close* Let’s get you to your tent, pal, huh?

*he loosely clung to Carlos as he stood up, still shaking softly as he nodded* ..okay

*Carlos rubs Max’s shoulder as he walks him over to his tent.* Do you have a different shirt you can change into so you don’t get dirt in your cot?

no.. all the others got wrecked so i had to get rid of them *he sighed softly* i’ve been meaning to get new ones

Oh… well, that’s something we’ll do soon. At least take off your hoodie so you don’t overheat, okay buddy? *he carries Max into the tent and gently sets him down on the cot*

*he hesitates before nodding again, pulling off his hoodie and tossing it aside. before he pulled his blanket over himself, Carlos could see he was wearing more bandages then normal*

*Carlos frowned slightly. He picked up Max’s hoodie and shook it out before folding it and setting it down at the foot of the bed.* Do you just wanna sleep, Max? Or do you wanna talk about anything?

*he shrugged slightly, his voice was quiet* i dunno.. some of the stuff we could talk about might keep me longer but there’s probably some stuff that needs to be talked about…

Might keep you longer? What does that mean, Max?

keep me up longer i mean *he chuckles slightly*

Oh. I’m sorry, I must’ve misheard. So… I take it that you do wanna talk, then?

*he glances away, tightly holding the blanket* do you ever… look at someone you love and realise… you don’t really love them anymore? you want to love them but you just don’t… and it just leaves you feeling guilty because you’ve been with them for so long and they’ve helped you so much a-and you don’t want to leave them but at the same time you’re worried that they’ll leave you *he dries his eyes and looks away*

*blinks at Max* Uh… no… I honestly can’t say that I have. But… I’ve been on the receiving end of unrequited love… *what the hell has Max gone through??*

*he sighs softly, almost whispering* it really sucks…

I’m sorry, buddy… I truly am. Sometimes though… romantic relationships run their course. It doesn’t mean you should stop being friends, but… if the love isn’t there, then…

Hatsville was not an easy place to get to, Carlos found out.
No commercial vehicle went in willingly, like boats or planes. Carlos had to
road trip there by himself in his car and set himself up in a very small and dingy motel at
the very edge of town, just across the bridge onto the island.

The readings were off the charts. Readings very similar to
things he had found in Night Vale… but never had he seen anything of this
level. The energy here was astounding, and he didn’t even know what it was!
Whatever it was, it was very, very old and very, very scientifically interesting.

Immediately he started asking questions. “What’s going on
here?” “Have you seen anything interesting?” “Who lives in that giant black hat
in the center of town?”

But all his questions were met with awkward glances, fearful
murmurs, and outright terrified stares. None of them were actual answers. But
he was a scientist – this didn’t deter him in the slightest! He was the very
definition of science: he didn’t know what was going on, but he was going to
find out!

Something was going on. A new scent had entered his town. Black Hat growled softly as he tapped his claws on his desk. Was it another hero, foolishly coming to try and defeat him? A stupid tourist who clearly had not read the signs? No matter, Black Hat would soon out the fear of god into them. Standing, he strode out of his top hat shaped mansion, his cane gripped tightly in his hands.

The danger meter Carlos kept on his person hadn’t once gone below the orange zone since he
came into town; never to yellow, or to green or blue or any of the friendlier
colors on the meter – just almost completely steady in the middle of the orange
zone. Sometimes it would jump clear to the end in the so-dark-it’s-almost-black
red Danger Zone, but then quickly it would return to the orange.

Carlos had had enough of the non-answers he’d been getting
from citizens. He gathered up his bag and gear – which included his danger
meter and an energy-reading machine that looked like a pair of dousing antennae
connected by two thin wires to another meter that beeped a lot – and started to
walk the streets and sidewalks of the city. The energy-reading machine beeped
as Carlos went and whenever the signal got stronger he hummed and followed the
stronger path.

Closer and closer he got to the mansion in the center of the
city and he didn’t even realize it when people seemed to just disappear around
him – like they were avoiding the area. He was so focused on his machines and
the antennae that he was oblivious to the people – or lack of people – around
him.

Black Hat’s head turned towards the strange noise and he scowled deeply. Someone was definitely being very stupid. He walked out of his yard, holding tighter onto his cane. “Who dares enter my property?”

Carlos jumped at the voice – not out of any actual fear though, it just really startled him. “Huh?” he asked aloud, looking around before his eyes fell on a rather well-dressed humanoid in a tall Lincoln-like tophat. He’d seen glow clouds, sentient patches of haze, various folks with odd bits of extra body parts, and a literal five-headed dragon back in Night Vale. He wasn’t bothered in the slightest by someone who appeared non-human.

“Oh – I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…” Carlos paused when he realized that he was still on the sidewalk. Well, that wasn’t in the property… “Oh, nevermind. Don’t worry, I’m not going to cross your property line, I promise.”

“This entire city is my property.” He snarled, his eye glowing red as he stared down at the human. The six-foot eldritch walked right up to him, towering over him. “You are a new human. State your business before I tear you to pieces.”

Carlos blinked at the being, surprised. He frowned at them. “Don’t be rude,” he chided politely. “Yes, I am a new person – new to you, if we wanna be technical. I’m here on a field expedition, searching for a mysterious energy that I’ve only seen in a couple other places. I’m a scientist. Uh… labcoat, see?” Carlos transfered one of the antennae to the other hand and with his now free hand he pinched the lapel of his coat and tugged it for emphasis.
