“I’m not sure,” Carlos said. “We had it in the Vault, so… maybe Vault 88 carried it out?” Carlos didn’t know much about Diamond City’s history past the Broken Mask incident and a little bit about the process of the ghouls being kicked out of Diamond City. “But basically… it was candy time.”

“I get like, the basics of it, I’ve heard somethin’ about it and seen the decorations still up from before the war, just never really got what it was about.”

Carlos nodded. “That’s alright,” he said. “It was some kind of harvest celebration maybe four hundred years ago, but turned into people dressing up in costumes for sweets and candy. Just… something about offering the the harvest to spirits of the land or something…”

Carlos set his tote bag on the coffee table and pulled out the funnel cakes. He offered the box to Hancock. “Wanna give the first one a try? I don’t know what a funnel cake is… but it looks good. If… squiggly.”

Carlos beamed at him and he pressed another kiss to Hancock’s mouth.
“Well, I try to be,” he said. Another kiss. “Happy Halloween, babe. I
know it’s really only Diamond City that celebrates, but… yeah. Consider
that an excuse to get sugar.”

“Wait, what?” He looked a little confused by that, he’d lived in Diamond City most of his life and never knew about that tradition. “When did they start that up? I never got to do anythin’ to celebrate when I was a kid there.”

“Ahh, another one of you.”

With a nod of his head, the Outcast held out a Nuka Cola to the stranger. “Try not to trip on your way down the porch steps.” He commented. “It is a bit slippery out there tonight.”

“Huh… I had no idea the wasteland still had Halloween,” Carlos said truthfully. “I was just making noise ‘cause I noticed the date. “Um… thanks.”

“Hey, Han! I got you something!” Carlos was carrying an old tote bag that he used when he went shopping. He pulled out a box of Sugar Bombs as well as a box of NukaWorld brand funnel cakes. “You have no idea how excited I was to find these!”

Delight crossed the ghoul’s face as he saw the sweets and he quickly descended on the bag, poking through it quickly before pulling out one of the funnel cakes and practically tackling Carlos in a hug and quick kiss. “You’re the fuckin’ best, y’know that? Absolutely phenomenal, sunshine.”

Carlos beamed at him and he pressed another kiss to Hancock’s mouth. “Well, I try to be,” he said. Another kiss. “Happy Halloween, babe. I know it’s really only Diamond City that celebrates, but… yeah. Consider that an excuse to get sugar.”

“Angie likes werewolves just fine. And she’s been around some of my adult children when they were in their wolf forms, along with my mate. The rest of the pack doesn’t really have much reason to be around her while in wolf shape.”

In other words, Angela was used to seeing werewolves as family and safe to be around. Which theoretically meant that she’d expect no harm to come from her Papa in wolf form.

Carlos let out a sigh at that. Good… that was good. Okay, things were shaping up to be alright, so far.

“That’s good to hear – I appreciate it,” he said to Mia. He sighed again. “Okay… and… you’ll be here with us? At least for a little bit?”

“I’ll stay as long as you need me to,” she confirmed. “Or, at least until I’ve had time to prove that you aren’t going to harm her. Have a little faith in yourself, Carlos. I trust you.”

Carlos couldn’t help the huff of laughter that he made. “Right… right, I’ll try. Th… I appreciate your help, Mia. So… should we still have the this rendezvous at my apartment? I have to, um… do a little wolf-proofing here anyhow.”

“You’re welcome, Carlos. And of course we can still do it at your apartment! Angie was looking forward to spending time with you, that includes being in Night Vale with you. When do you want us to come over?”

Carlos sighed. “Well… sometime before nightfall, I think,” he responded. “Just… so I still have the vocal cords to help explain to Angie what’s going to happen. And we can have dinner too, if she hasn’t already eaten. Or dessert – I have some ice cream.”

“That works, yeah. And we hadn’t had dinner yet, I can bring something by if you’d like. Want to say….half an hour, to give you time to do a little prep before we arrive?” She was trying not to be overbearing, letting him have final say in the plans.

“Yeah, if you want to. I have some gluten-free mac and cheese here, and that’s enough to make her and me happy without burning the house down.” Carlos chuckled. “But you’re welcome to bring food over tonight if you want to. Half an hour sounds good… or whatever ‘half an hour’ means for me here in Night Vale. I’ll expect you soon.”
