“I never said you were a superhero.“

Tony couldn’t help but smirk at the words from this man in front of him. After everything that had happened with Hammer, he’d wanted to make one last stand against the way that he’d been treated by finding the people that had been left out of a job from him and test their own skills. One of those men stood in front of him now.

It hadn’t been too hard to find him, although there had been a long list of people to vet. He hadn’t been shocked that he found the skills of many of Hammer’s former employees to be sub-par but he was hoping that at the very least this endeavour would prove interesting.

“Well I suppose that would be too much to ask.” He agreed easily. “But I wouldn’t mind the comparison. I am that cool after all.”

Carlos tried not to grin at that. He had heard about Tony
Stark’s charisma – he had watched the TED talks and many other presentations
that the man had made whenever he could. Carlos genuinely liked Stark’s
personality, even if one were to say he was egotistical. Which made the fact
that he used to work for one of Stark’s biggest competitors, and criminal maniac, horribly ironic and kind of
awkward on Carlos’ part.

“I just mean, sir – Mr Stark,” Carlos started to explain, a
little nervously, “that, uh… it’d be unfair to make that comparison. I don’t
really think that ‘superheroes’ exist. You are a hero, certainly and an active
advocate for many charities. I just…” Carlos squirmed a bit. “I dunno; it’s
just not something I’d call you. I find that, personally, you’re more in the ‘inspiration’
and a ‘force for good’ categories. I’m sorry… I guess I’m not making much sense.”

Yondu nods to him then looks to Tullk. “Keep me updated on him. I’ll let you know when we land. So you can take him to the Hot springs. Come on carlos. Lets head out.” Rubs Carlos’s ear lightly in affection.

Carlos shivered slightly. He stowed his phone away and stood
up to follow Yondu.

“Good luck, Captain,” Tullk told him as they started to
leave.

“Thanks……” looks to Carlos as they walk then scratches his neck before putting a arm around his waist.

Carlos tensed slightly. He was surprised Yondu would hold
him in the middle of the hallway. Slowly though, he relaxed and leaned his body
weight into Yondu’s – just a bit, so he didn’t get in the way of the other
walking. “So, um… now what?” he asked.

“Me?
The radio host?” He shook his head as he was already looking for a
makeshift weapon to protect himself from the crash. Digging through the
drawers he found a long titration pipette which he smack on the table to
break. “I owe you on this.” The pipette had now turned into something
that could puncture human skin. “Don’t know how much but I owe you
something.”

Carlos looked at the broken instrument in mild horror, but
he said nothing as he grabbed a nearby stool and held it out in front of him,
the legs pointed out. There was a small shuffling noise as something moved on
the floor, shifting glass from the broken item, as well as a small,
high-pitched mumbling.

It wasn’t coming out at them, which was a very good sign.
Carlos started to slowly move toward the sounds, hoping there wasn’t anything
too nasty there.

“Kill….
not hurt… kill him…. to get you out of the way….aside from Kraglin and
peter you’ve always been my shield. Attacking or killing your mate
would….. have made you … open for attack as well… then they would come
after me. As for who….. I don’t know yet….”

Tullk huffed and shook his head, unhappy. “Find out, will
you Captain? I wanna give him a piece of my mind…” He then looked at Carlos
with a frown. “An’ keep your humans close – No telling what they’ll try to do
to your squeeze, here.”

“I’m not his squeeze,” Carlos said quickly. At least… not
yet, he thought. Who knew when they would get to that point.

“No ones going to hurt carlos. Of that I can assure you.”Smiles at Carlos.

Half whines and stops breathing for a moment then coughs and shifts snuggling against tullks chest.

Carlos’ heart lurched for Half-nut. He looked at Yondu. “Um,
Captain… the medicine,” he reminded.

“Right….. “ sets the medicine down then pours more tea and hands it to Tullk and helps him hold halfnut as he starts one of his seizures then settles down. Yondu put the cup to half’s lips.

Carlos just stood by awkwardly, watching them try to get
some tea and medicine into the sick Ravager.

It was pretty scary, seeing Halfnut like this. Who the hell would
do this to someone?

Yondu watches him then grabs the brush brushing his long black hair. “We’ll be landing on a planet with natural hot springs. They are mineral torch hand the waters have healing properties….you should take him to soak.”

Tullk looked at him with a slightly raised eyebrow. “That’s
a much fancier place for leave than usual, Captain,” he said, teasing very slightly.
Tullk though was really grateful.

Yondu gives him a look a slight purple to his cheeks. “Keep it up and I’ll have Oblo take Jamie there and you’ll be stuck here.” Blinks as Jamie starts purring from having the brush massage his scalp with every stroke.

Tullk just gave him a toothy grin, but said nothing as
Half-nut’s purring had drawn his attention. He held the youngest Ravager close,
rubbing his arm soothingly.

Carlos wasn’t sure what to do with himself. He was tired of
just standing there awkwardly so he went and sat in an old chair at the far
corner of the room.  He pulled his phone
out and, as he’d done many times since being taken from Earth, he started to go
through his text conversations with his Dad and his brother. It was sort of a
sad game – just reading and trying to imagine the words in his family’s voices.

Yondu looks to him and sighs going over and runs his finger through his hair lightly and smiles at him sadly. “Soon Carlos… Soon.”

Carlos jumped, surprised, and looked up at Yondu. “Huh? Oh,
um…” He dropped his head down, sheepish that Yondu knew what he was looking at.
“Thanks,” he murmured, closing out of the messages. He hadn’t meant to get
caught – he was just trying to pass the time.

He wondered when they were going to leave Half-nut and Tullk to rest.

“Oh, I’m fine, nothing that I can walk off…” He performed a quick visual to see if he actually was struck he cause he needed medical attention. His magic wasn’t going to help him out of this one. Hopefully the beasts…imps…monsters? couldn’t get into the lab by sheer force. From what it seemed they would be in here for quite a while until those things went away.

They were in a lab. Clean, white tiles and clean white walls
with long metal tables arranged in rows. There were cabinets and a couple sinks
in the room, as well as various instruments and random items on the tables. For
some reason, next to the decontamination shower sat a bookcase that was locked
up in bullet-proof glass and chains.

Carlos looked the other man over, a little worriedly. “You
sure?” he asked. He then sighed, relieved and somewhat satisfied with the man’s
answer. “Good… it’s very good to hear.” He looked at Stephen with a frown. “So…
you’ve seen them. What do you think?” he asked.

“Well, it has been seen before by me, but nothing like that you know what I mean?” Stephen placed his hands on his hips and bent over slightly to catch his breath. “I really did thought you were messing around for a moment, but this town…oh this town is filled with so much….strangeness that I feel like there are things that I must know to help you comprehend this madness….and I have seen madness….madness? This is Nightvale, a brand new test for the great Doctor Strange.”

Carlos just listened to him as he spoke. He then laughed
softly. “You sound a little like Cecil, the way you talk,” he said. “Getting
all narrative and mysterious…” He chuckled again, and it gave way to a sigh as
he was still trying to catch his breath. “Okay… okay, now what? How can I help?”

Carlos jumped slightly when he heard a crash somewhere in
the lab.
