“AH! Nurf, don’t do that!”

Gwen watched as David ran off to scold the other kids for getting dirty.

“You seem a lot less rambunctious than these other kids.” she noted, looking down at Angela.

Angela looked at the other kids with a slight
frown. But then looked up at Gwen again. ‘Really?” she asked. “Well, my daddy
said it was important to do as adults said when they were in charge of you. My
mama though says sometimes it’s okay not to if it’s for a good reason. I get in
trouble at Mama’s house sometimes, but not at Daddy’s. His house is small and
it’s in a weird down so I have to follow the rules to be safe.”

“What are you getting all mad about, David?”
Nerf was heard asking. “I thought the point of a hike was to get dirty?”

“Well– not by pushing other kids in the mud! You don’t want to get super dirty before we get up to the top!” David said, trying his best to be polite.

Gwen smiled, crossing her arms. “Well that is a pretty good rule… but what do you get in trouble for? Like I said, you seem pretty calm.”

“Well, my Mama has a lot of weird stuff at her house – like,
artifacts and stuff,” Angela explained. “Things get broken sometimes. And all
my siblings live there, so does Drake and some of Mama’s other friends, and we
fight sometimes. Daddy’s house though I’m usually the only one. Also, he has a
lab downstairs and he tells me not to touch things down there without him
around.”

“I will never be
clean!
” Preston wailed.

B-but I have no where to go…I have to go back…

Carlos: Right now, you have camp. So you’ll be here until
the end of the summer. It’s the perfect time to call CPS and have that house
checked out. David and I will both attest to what you’ve told us. If you have
any relatives…

No, no, don’t be sorry, kiddo. Max, I didn’t know.  Don’t be sorry, Max, it’s not your fault.
They’re wrong – they’re so wrong.

Carlos was quiet for a moment, debating whether
to go into depth about her. He decided not – they were on a road trip. If it
was going to happen, there was always another time.

“Well… suffice to say, she’s been obliviated
since, and things got better after that,” Carlos told him. “I went to regular
elementary school for a little bit, though my dad told me to be careful with my
powers. Still, I did accidentally enlarge my friend’s rock collection once –
officials fixed it though and I was able to keep my friends.”

“I’m sorry about that, mate.” A frown crossed the redhead’s lips at that, he couldn’t even imagine what growing up like that was like. His own mother, while sometimes distant, was always supportive, at the very least. “I had lots of muggle friends growin’ up too, not ‘cause I was muggle-born or anythin’, my ma just preferred to socialize with everyone, felt like it’d make her kids more well-rounded or something–– not that it worked on my brother. When I first got my magic, I remember accidentally setting my mate’s curtains on fire when I sneezed, heh, put it out quick enough, but his folks were real mad, blamed him for it and I couldn’t exactly tell ‘em the truth.”

“It’s fine… it’s for the better, I’ve learned a while ago.”
He smiled sympathetically at Hancock’s story. “I’m sorry that happened. Did you
ever make it up to your friend?”

“If you are able to, I… would actually be very
much obliged,” Carlos told him sincerely. “You know me – I don’t have the
firepower to be an effective scavenger.” He looked at Hancock and offered him a
slight, grateful smile. He got another handful of cereal from his bowl and
munched some more.

“I know, man, this world is a tough thing to adjust to when you’ve lived a sheltered life. Besides, you kinda strike me as too sweet to really enjoy killing anything.” He took another bite of cereal, studying Carlos as he chewed then swallowed. “I can set somethin’ up for ya. Actually, I might be able to get ya in at the Memory Den if ya want, I’m sure Irma would appreciate someone helpin’ with upkeep of those machines and Doc Amari could probably use a hand as well, I doubt she’d mind havin’ another genius around to work with, y’know?”

Carlos looked at Hancock again. “Do you think she’d want me?”
he asked. “I’m… I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting either Irma or Doctor
Amari, unfortunately. I, uh… never had caps that I was willing to spend on
using a Lounger.”

Smiles and gives a chuckle. “You’re… so damn cute…”

Carlos stared at Yondu, surprised. He looked
down at his food, feeling a little embarrassed. He could feel his ears warm up.
“I… Um, thank you,” he said softly.

“Your welcome.” Smiles at him happily.

Carlos laughed softly, nervous. “Um… you ever
dated anyone before?”

He cringed a bit. Shit – no, you shouldn’t talk about past
relationships with someone you’re dating. At least not right away. Dammit, Carlos!

“No….. actually this is the first time. I have.. slept with… well ….. robots… sex bots….. but I mean….. nothing emotionally tied….”

Carlos blinked at him, perturbed by that. But
he nodded slightly; because of course it made sense. Some folks just needed
that sort of interaction… and better hooker-bots than someone else actually
getting exploited from it.

“I… I see. Yeah, it’s… been a while since I’ve
done anything like this too. I mean… I think I was P… Quill’s age. Nothing
lasting happened, it’s just… the last time I gave it a shot.” He looked at
Yondu. “Um, is there… a reason for that? Culture, or… what? I’m sorry if that’s
a dumb question – I’ve only been on a Xandarian colony so I only know about
Xandarians and those who visit on occasion.”

“What? Me not being with a actual person?….. yes and no…. yesas when we mate it’s for life…. and no it’s because I couldn’t trust anyone like that… not after…. uhhh…… being freed from slavery…”

Carlos nodded, accepting. He supposed he could
understand that. “So… you’re trying with me because… you trust me? Or, you think you can trust me. I mean,
maybe not now, but sometime.”

“In a way…. I guess.. I do trust you I just……I haven’t trusted like I do with you in a long time… other then my boys.”

“Oh, yeah?” Carlos asked. “I… well, I suppose
I should be flattered. Thank you.” He smiled slightly at Yondu. It was a little
strange that Yondu had taken a liking to him. He was a practical nobody, after
all. But… this could prove at the least to be interesting. Hopefully fun.

“Thank you for accepting….. I know I’m….. not really your type……. you know……. but thank you for letting me try to court you.”

Carlos just shrugged slightly, still smiling. “To
be honest, I don’t know if I even have a type. And I wouldn’t be ‘letting’ you
do this if I wasn’t at least a little interested in… whatever this might be. We’ll
just see how it goes, huh?”
