Not so Villainous (closed w/ theblackestofhats)

Black
Hat didn’t really notice that Carlos had picked up on his body
language – but then, it wasn’t actually something that he was
watching for. He did notice the blinking at the sudden level
of light in the area, but that was fairly expected, as was some form
of frowning. Seemed he’d noticed not only the discrepancy in
location, but also the absence of anything resembling his car. It was
only then that Black Hat realised that perhaps there might have been
something useful in there – perhaps he’d go pick it up at some
point…

“Life
energy, you say?” That could be intriguing, though he’d probably
need Flug to determine what profitable uses it could be put to. He
might enjoy science, but that didn’t mean he was actually good
at it. “I noticed you writing about cells of some sort, yes… Heh,
it was Dr Flug who informed me of your blog – he’s living here as
well. Perhaps I ought introduce you?”

Carlos looked at Black Hat, still frowning in confusion.  “Dr Flug?” he asked. “Yeah, I’m afraid that I’m
not familiar with his work or… him at all, actually.” Did any of Carlos’ colleagues
know him? It was possible, but unlikely that Carlos hadn’t at least heard of
him before. That was very weird, he thought.

“Um, yes, I’m sure I’d love to meet him,” he told Black Hat
finally, giving him a polite smile.

“U-um…” The little boy approached Carlos. He looked like…. Max..? “Sir..?” He gently pulled on Carlos’ sleeve to get his attention. He even sounded like Max! “Have you… maybe.. seen my cat?” (ihopethisisgoodyoudonthavetoanswer-) ((@reversemaxsearchhistory))

Carlos looked down at the boy, a little surprised by his apparent sheepishness. Max was usually more confident than this.

Immediately Carlos turned to face him fully. “Hey – no, I haven’t seen a cat. What does it look like? Do you need help looking for it?”

@reversemaxsearchhistory

“Th-they…”
Max shivered, clearly fighting back tears as he tried his best not to
cry. “Sometimes they h-hit me… or.. lock me outside and don’t let me
ba-back in…” He whimpered, tears slowly forming in his eyes.

What in the actual hell? Carlos thought angrily. That was unacceptable. “I am so sorry to hear that, Max,” he said softly. “You’re right – that is not something parents do.”

He pulled down the collar of his sweater to reveal a red mark around his neck. “S-sometimes…” He started, choking back tears. “Sometimes they’d even… e-even..” He couldn’t even finish the sentence. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he shook, quietly sobbing.

Carlos reached into his pocket for his packet of tissues. He noted that he was running out as he pulled one out and offered it to Max. “Here you go, buddy,” he said softly. “It’s okay – you don’t have to tell me right now.” Carlos could already guess. That was just… not acceptable in any sense of the word. Something had to be done to protect Max. After they found his cat, Carlos was going to have to sit down with him and talk seriously with the boy.

He thankfully accepted the tissue and quickly dried his eyes. “Thanks Carlos…” After having dried his eyes he smiled softly, “Can we go find my cat now..?”

“Sure,” Carlos said, offering the kid a smile back. “Does she answer to her name at all? Sabrina, I mean?”

He nodded, his soft smile not leaving his face. “Yes, she does!”

“Alright. Let’s try calling out for her, then. Go ahead, Max.” The cat was more likely to react to Max’s voice than to Carlos’.

“Alright.” He cleared his throat before calling out to Sabrina. It took few tries but after sometime a quiet meowing could be heard from nearby bushes.

“I think I hear something, Max,” Carlos said.

Carlos was just about ready to drink down his broth, but he
wanted to wait a second to say something to Hancock – something that he hoped the
ghoul would take to heart.  “Well, something good had to happen,” Carlos
told him. “I mean… you’re here after all.” He gave Hancock a smile. He was a
bit embarrassed by the sappiness, but he made himself watch Hancock to see how
he took it.

A soft snort escaped, he should have figured Carlos would say something cheesy like that, but it did bring a smile to his face. He stared down at his hands, a slightly sad look coming to his eyes. “I guess you’re right, heh. Think that might be a matter of opinion though. But…. thank you, sunshine, you’re too sweet.”

Carlos huffed slightly. “I think my opinion matters quite a bit,” he responded. “I’m a
scientist, Hancock – we’re known for being pretty smart.” He set down his bowl
of broth and wrapped his arms around Hancock, hugging him tightly. “You’re a
good thing, Hancock, I promise,” he said, his tone a little more serious. “If
you weren’t here, I probably wouldn’t be here either. Nor would a lot of people be.”

“Before coming out here, I hadn’t had a bath since I was
really young. The Vault is mostly made up of single-person showers, and pretty
early we’d learn to use them.” He took another deep breath and shifted a bit,
listening to the water blurb against the edges of the tub from his movement. “We
just started the bath and it’s already the most comfortable one you’ve had,
huh?” he asked Hancock, smirking very slightly.

Carlos listened to the other’s reasons, nodding as he could
understand. Don’t make it a big deal then… he could do that. Too bad he missed
it the first time around, but… it explained Hancock practically disappearing on
him last month, now that he realized it. “Your secret’s safe with me, Han. I
promise.”

He then looked at Hancock and smiled at him. “And… as for
the meteor shower, that was just the first time it was recorded since the United
States became a thing,” he corrected. “That was maybe five hundred years ago.
Of course it’s always been happening, just… that was when the United States
first observed it and wrote it down.”

“Thanks, sunshine, I appreciate it.” He offered a weak little smile and leaned in to peck him on the cheek lightly. Hancock took a few more bites of his noodles as Carlos spoke, setting the bowl down once it seemed to be just broth left. “Ah, of course, heh. That makes more sense. Still a pretty cool little fact. Who knew anythin’ good happened on my birthday, huh?”

Carlos was just about ready to drink down his broth, but he

Carlos hummed. “Well, I said the short answer is ‘yes’. But the long answer… is ‘Yeeeeeesssss….?’ Drawn out with an inflection at the end, as the one answering isn’t sure if what they speak is entirely the truth. Lemme explain: There are, technically, various ways to leave. You can drive to Desert Bluffs, an equally weird and seemingly inescapable place. Or a portal to the early Jurassic to the early Cretaceous period could open and one may be transported to a time before Night Vale even existed. Or you could simply stop existing. That happens too, sometimes. But I myself have been trapped in a Desert Otherworld that seems to be an alternate universe that runs very closely to Night Vale in the multiverse. So, technically… you can leave this place. But being picky about how you leave… that’s where it gets tricky.”

He nodded, closing his eyes.

“Great. Yes. Wonderful. Thank you.” he said. “Well, all that stuff can get fucked, because I will find my way back to my world. What about you? Are you happy to stay here the rest of your life?”

Carlos frowned slightly at Sylvain, but in response to his question the scientist shrugged and nodded. “The town is very interesting – I honestly haven’t seen a place like it before, and I can always find myself to be very engaged in my work here.”
