wait, you’re not suppose to follow strangers? why? don’t people follow stranger all the time? *he tilts his head*

*looks at Max* Has… no one ever told you that? Oh my god…
okay. Um… well, it’s for safety reasons. Sometimes, people want to um… hurt
little kids. I don’t know why, but they want to. So parents are supposed to
tell their kids not to follow strangers or do anything a stranger says because
it could hurt you.

And that instruction is especially true with the shadow
people – we don’t know who they are or what they want. So don’t do anything
they tell you to, okay?

oh… but.. what if the stranger is nice? all the strangers i’ve met have turned into friends! my bosses were strangers, well the one still is kinda, but now i know them, and know that they don’t to hurt me! *he smiles*

You can try to get to know them, but if they tell you to go
someplace with them on your own or tell you to keep bad secrets you shouldn’t
listen to them. You need to be careful, Max. When you first meet people, don’t
do what they say.

well.. what counts as a ‘bad secret’? cause i have a lot of secrets and i want to know if their bad..

Well, things like being told to lie. Like, if someone says “don’t
tell so-and-so I broke their toy” or something. Or “don’t tell them I stole
their candy”. (this kid’s parents should have already told him this… did they really not care enough?)

“Quick, take my hand, it’s urgent!” (whispers-of-change)

“Being
your own boss,” she said quietly, taking a moment before she looked
back up. “The people who’ve been in charge of me in the past have been…
Less than favorable,” she added. “So… It’s better this way.”

“Oh,” Carlos said softly. That didn’t sound good. He could
only imagine how it was, as he’d had a few bad jobs himself. “Well… I’m glad
everything’s better this way,” he said. “It’s kind of useless to hate your own
job, right?”

a-a
month or two? it’s kinda hard to keep track of time most days.. i think
it started after the first time i became a ghost *he looked back up at
Carlos*

Became a ghost? You mean, when you died?

yeah, one of those times *he smiled slightly* but after that… everything was different, i never really felt like myself again and the shadow people showed up…

Just… like that?

*he nods* and now they won’t leave..

Why not? Have they ever said why?

*he shakes his head* just said they want me to follow them

Don’t follow them. It’s the same principle with any stranger
– you don’t know who they are or what they want so don’t go with them. *sighs*
(Thank God Angie has some protection items… Her mother was very cautious.)

“Oh,
okay,” she said with a sigh of relief. “I just wanted to make sure I
wasn’t going to get you in trouble or anything,” she explained. “That’d
be a terrible first impression for me to make, I would feel… so bad.”

Carlos shook his head again. “No, no, you’re okay,” he
promised. “I’m basically my own boss, and it’s pretty great.” He took a sip of
his coffee and smiled at her.

“Yeah, it… It is pretty liberating, huh?” she said, a slight edge to her voice now. Her heart was beating just a little bit faster as she remembered what it was like to have superiors in her workplace. She much preferred what she was doing now. Much preferred not fearing everything and deciding what she was going to do each day. She blinked quickly and looked away, her eyes eventually finding her cup before she took a long sip. “It’s good…” she whispered.

Carlos was a little confused since she took so long to
respond. “The tea?” he asked her. “Or being your own boss?”

“And
now you’re a big-shot scientist with several degrees!” she grinned. “I
guess you’re right,” she smiled. “I’m not trying to get famous or
anything, though. Not even trying to sell anything. Just kinda…” She
shrugged, looking for the words. “Trying to have fun and keep myself
busy, I suppose. I have a lot of downtime at home by myself.”

“And that’s perfectly fine too,” Carlos said with a smile. “Have
you ever watched Bob Ross, by the way?”

She smiled and shook her head. “Hm-mm. I have heard of him, though, and from what I’ve seen, he seemed to be a very kind and gentle man. His show just wasn’t ever anything I’ve really felt entirely interested in. You know?”

“Really?” Carlos asked. “That’s surprising. But each to
their own, I guess. I don’t know much about painting and art, but watching him
make something and with the tone of voice he uses… sometimes when I have a bad
day, it’s just nice to spend twenty minutes to watch, you know?”

“Yeah, I can understand that,” she smiled. “I think for me, it was always just the type of art that set me off of it,” she said, her tone nearly questioning. “What he made was impressive and beautiful, yes, but it wasn’t anything I, myself, would ever want to make, so it just never piqued my interest, and I never watched it,” she explained.

“Ah,” Carlos said with a nod. “I see. I guess his work just
strokes my stimming centers, you know? The, uh… it literally means ‘stimulate’,
and it’s… well, relaxing. For me – not for everyone, it seems.” He smiled at
her kindly before taking a sip of his coffee.

“I understand what you meant,” she hummed in response. “But who knows, maybe I’ll go home and watch a few episodes later. You’ve got me kinda interested now,” she added with a grin. She silently wondered just how long they had been here, and if she was keeping him from work. She would feel guilty if she was, but at the same time, she wanted to stay here, talking and getting to know him. “I’m… not keeping you here too long, am I..?” she asked quietly, almost nervous.

Carlos smiled and shook his head. “Nah… the great thing
about science is I can kinda make my own schedule,’ he said. “Unless it’s
something time-sensitive, which I don’t have right now.”
