Carlos was taken off-guard, but he merely gave the other a contemplative frown before reaching out to comply. “Uh… alright,” he said.

@whispers-of-change

The
grin on her face grew. She rested her chin on the heel of her palm and
let out an almost dreamy sigh. He was such a kind soul. If given the
opportunity and ability to do anything, he would chose to do something that would benefit others. “That’s wonderful,” she said softly. “So wonderful of you.”

Carlos smiled. “Is it? I mean, I suppose there can be some
models that could assist people with special needs as well… sort of like a
service animal without the need to be fed. I mean, there’s all sorts of
possibilities.”

Her face softened as she felt her heart melting. “You’re… so kind…” she smiled. It was a moment before she realized she had been slowly leaning closer and closer to Carlos, and was practically leaning halfway across the table at this point. Her face flushed darkly as she quickly pulled back, and she cleared her throat. She set a hand in her lap and took a sip of her tea. “That’s… That’s a really great idea,” she said softly, smiling across the table at him.

Carlos’ face started to warm. Was it really kind? He’d like
to think that anyone decent would have thought of that as well.

“Um, t-thank you,” he said to her with a smile.

He heard his name be calledby one of the baristas so he got
up to go get his coffee. “Just a second,” he assured Selina and he hurried off
to go get it.

She
smiled, letting out a soft, breathy laugh. “Glad I don’t sound as crazy
as I thought,” she said softly. “So, uh, you said you had a few
different degrees, huh? What’s that like? You must be, like, super
smart.”

Carlos’ smile turned sheepish and he shrugged his shoulders
slightly. “Yeah, I… I guess I’m smart. Book-smart, I mean. It’s… Well, I’m not
quite sure how to explain it. I just… know things that most other people don’t,
I guess? Like, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. But of course,
sometimes, I don’t know something. Like if you ask me about plants, I wouldn’t
know. I’m a scientist, not a botanist. Y’know?”

“Well yeah, you may not be a botanist, but you have multiple degrees!” she said, excited. “What are they? What kind of stuff do you know?” she asked, leaning forward, her eyes bright and wide, her interest abundantly clear.

Carlos felt like blushing. “Well, my favorite degree is in
Mechanical Engineering? Like, building things and inventing things. But I also
know about Biology and Chemistry and Physics and Math… just… a lot of things.”

“Mechanical engineering? So what’s your favorite kind of stuff to build and invent?” she asked. She was almost like an excited puppy at this point, all but bouncing in her seat. She was fascinated, here to learn everything she could about this man.

Carlos blinked at her. He smiled again. “Um… well, I really
love it when I get the chance to work on robots,” he admitted. “Robotics are,
like… super incredible, you know? And there’s so much they can do already and
we’re just learning more ways to get them to help us.”

She gave an enthusiastic nod in response. “Mhmm!” She thought for a moment before she popped up in her seat a little. “Oh! If you could create a robot that could do anything, anything in the whooole wide world, what would it do?” she asked, a grin spreading across her face.

Carlos thought about that. “I guess… well, this isn’t
technically the ‘whole wide world’, but… I think it’d be very prudent to develop
an AI to provide meaningful conversation to space travelers. The robotic parts
would be standard, I suppose – wheels for movement and prehensile servos so it
can perform tasks – but a tangible personoid to be able to talk to that isn’t
just a volleyball with some paint on it… I think that would be amazing.”

“Yeah… it’s probrobly why I took in peter a bit…. no mate and this genetic urge to… pouch something you know……”

Carlos hummed softly and nodded. He leaned his head down
onto Yondu’s shoulder and just lay there, giving what comfort he thought he
could.

Pulls him close and kisses his head nuzzling at him then yelps as he hears a scream and then Kraglin belly flops into the spring with a splash from above. Peter was laughing his ass off from ontop of a high cliff.

Carlos jumped in shock and looked up at Peter, watching the
boy just lose it.

Kraglin started to emerge from the spring, a bluish blush
all across his front from the impact of the water. He looked like a wet cat the
way he stood up, and he actually growled as he snapped his head up to glare at
Peter.

“Pete – I’m gettin’
you for that, you Terran brat!!”

Peter laughs at him and sticks his tongue out at him and runs off laughing.

Yondu huffs. “Kraglin… I’ll give you the count of 5 before I whistle ya. Scram… and go drown peter away from me.”

“B-but don’t actually drown him, please,” Carlos pleaded. “Play
safely, okay?”

Kraglin just rolled his eyes at Carlos. But he nodded at
Yondu. “Aye, Captain,” he muttered and he slogged out of the spring to go after
Peter.

Yondu chuckles looking to carlos. “Kids. My troublesome boys.” Smiles and kisses him. “My fuzzy man.”

Carlos would have blushed if the heat from the spring hadn’t
already made his skin flush. “So I take it you’re okay with my hair,” he joked
nervously. “Some humans have a little trouble with it…”

“I like cute fuzzy things. Your fur doesn’t bother me one bit.” Nuzzles him kissing at him and purrs. “Do you… mind all my scars?”

Carlos looked at Yondu. He shook his head slightly. “No. Or,
I mean… they don’t take away from who you are,” he corrected. “I do mind them
in that… someone felt entitled to hurt you. And… I’m sorry for that…”

Ugh, now he sounded like he was pitying Yondu. He wasn’t –
he really wasn’t. At least, he thought he wasn’t…

“Oh, yeah – certainly!” Carlos said. “I think I’ll take
apart the terminal that we salvaged first and clean the parts so we have them
ready for when I open up your terminal.” He looked to Hancock with a smile. “I
think I said this before, but don’t be afraid to ask any questions – I’ll
answer whatever you’re wondering!”

“I can help clean some shit if ya show me how.” He offered as he settled down near Carlos to join him, ready to lend a hand where he could. “If there’s uh…. like anything you can tell me about regular cleaning or maintenance or whatever, that’d be good too. Whatever I can do to keep this thing runnin’ pretty well.”

Carlos looked at him and he smiled. “Oh, of course,” he
said.

Carlos got his tools and set them aside before he started to
carefully unwrap the terminal that they got from the fabric he’d wrapped it in.
He then took out one of his screwdrivers and started to take off the casing.
